-Objects that resonate sense of her or him
There is an object that reminds one of someone. Even though that someone is gone, their left belongings make one to think of them. An object can evoke a scene of past memories.
In “Allegory of Objects” series, there are a Ballerina, a Salesman, and a Soldier. All of these characters left objects in the forest. These are a pair of pink ballet shoes, a soldier’s hat, and a sales man’s moustache, and a plant. Their left objects are intertwined and create stories.
The Ballerina
The Ballerina is pure and sincere. The pair of the ballet shoes means everything to her. Without the shoes, she can’t perform ballet, and she gets lost. The ballet shoes give her a title and a responsibility. With the title of “Ballerina,” she is a young and beautiful aspiring artist. She becomes a plain girl without the label of a “Ballerina.” The pair of ballet shoes can mean an open door to her future, as well as the present time of demanding practice.
The Salesman
He lives a life of routine. The Salesman is not performing well on his job; he is not interested in making big profits in sales. His mind is somewhere else. Secretly, he wants to become a classical Piano Player.
Plants
Plants comfort him. A plant is a pure living object, there is no profit, and sales related to it. It is just there quietly growing, and watching him. The fact that it’s a living object makes a big difference. It is a companion with one sided interaction. No reaction or interaction involved. Its presence is just there quietly, it needs little care as well.
Moustache
He wonders about what it would be like living as a different person. He wants to wear a disguise. He buys a moustache, and tries to disguise himself. What kind of a new role would the moustache give him? The moustache gives him a glimpse of living as a different person. He quietly watches how other people would react to him with his moustache on. Does the moustache give him a new freedom? Would it make him happy?
A wandering soldier
He is drifting away from the reality of being a heroic figure who serves his country. But why is he still wearing his uniform even though he is trying to escape from the role? What kind of role does the uniform give him? It might have gone through different stages of changes. When he first became a soldier, it might have given him pride.
But now it means a trace from his past, a past that he is proud of? Or wants to forget? The uniform gets him respect and attention from people, but what does he think about that while he is drifting away in the forest? Would the perception become too much of a burden for him? Or is he simply enjoying playing the role?
Initial inspiration for “Allegory of Objects” series came from after reading Orhan Pamuk’s novel, “ The Museum of Innocence,” which is a sad love story of a man who loved one woman for decades. He stole and collected her used belongings over the years. Whenever he was looking at the collected objects, they triggered associated memories and stories about her.
When meeting someone new without any information and context about the person, people automatically observe the person’s appearance, belonging, clothes, and make inferences about who the person is. It can be right, or wrong depends on how good your observation skills are.
I began to get interested in how objects can have different meanings to different groups of people. There are conventional meanings, personal meanings for people who used to own the object, and for those who knew the person who originally owned the object, and the personal history.
First there is a general meaning. In general, a pair of ballet shoes can be seen as a feminine object. When people watch ballet, they enjoy the beautiful performance, but often do not get reminded of hard efforts of ballerinas. The fact is that Ballerinas train hard until their shoes are torn apart at times. Lives of Ballerinas are based on hard training, and discipline. Think of swans, how swans look beautiful when they are floating on the water, but under the water, they are constantly moving their feet to be able to float on the surface of the water.
Secondly, with their own personal experiences added on, there is a whole other meaning for a person who once owned the object. There might be a secret that the person only knows of.
Lastly, for those of who know the personal history of the object, and the person who used to own it, new layers of meanings are added on. The object can evoke a certain imagery and memory of a specific time or an event that is associated with the person. It can also bring out the senses about the person’s being, such as visual appearance, character, scent, or feeling.
Another idea that is conveyed through the series is “How objects can point out and dictate certain Role Playing, and Labeling.” I’ve always been interested in the idea of “ Role Playing.” In our society, there are always roles that are expected to be performed by certain groups of people. Some objects evoke specific imagery of expected roles. Iconic objects such as the army uniform can make people think of “patriotism,” or “braveness.” What if it is a soldier who is really sentimental, and running away from reality?
When someone does not fit the expected stereotype of a role, people immediately seemed to get confused, and wonder. Some might try to categorize and label the new role of the person.
How the objects imply assumptions about the characters in the first place, and how people would react when they found out their perception and guesses were wrong is interesting to me.
In the “Allegory of Objects” series, the twisted element is that the characters’ real beings are what people had unexpected to see. The soldier is running away from his duty, but still wearing the uniform, and the professional looking Salesman secretly wants to become a Pianist.
As an Artist, these are people who I am interested in portraying. The people who are choosing different paths from so-called socially standard routes. They are true to their feelings, and following their own instinct and judgment.
Everyone has different roles to satisfy. These roles have expectation from the social culture and from oneself.
I started to wonder, which is more important, accomplishing your own expectations or others’.

추억의 한 장면을 연상시키는 그녀의 또는 그의 물건
-소유품
” 물건의 의미” 시리즈에는 발레리나, 세일즈맨 과 군인이 등장한다. 이들의 소유품은 주인이 떠나간 자리에 남아 누군가와 소통한다. 그 물건들은 발레리나의 분홍색 발레슈즈, 군인의 모자, 그리고 세일즈맨의 수염과 식물이다. 이 물건들이 연결고리로 얽히여 이야기를 만들고 소유했던 사람들에 관한 추억을 불러일으키는 매게체가 된다.
발레리나
순수하고 열정적인 발레리나에게 발레 슈즈는 여러가지 의미를 내포한다. 훌륭한 발레리나가 되기위한 미래의 꿈을 의미 하기도 하지만 힘든 훈련과정을 지켜나가는 현재를 의미하기도 한다.
세일즈맨
매일 매일 반복되는 무료한 삶을 사는 세일즈맨. 세일즈맨은 세일즈에는 관심이 별로 없고 마음은 막연히 다른곳에 가있다. 비밀리에 그는 어렸을적부터 클래식 피아노 연주자가 되고 싶은 꿈이 있었다.
식물
식물은 세일즈맨에게 심리적으로 위안을 주는 물체. 매출 이익등 세일즈에 관련된 일에 연관되지 않고 조용히 존재한다. 식물은 살아있는 생물이기에 일반 물체와는 또다른 의미를 가진다. 아무 반응을 보이지 않지만 조용히 세일즈맨을 지켜보는 식물, 한쪽 방향적인 소통이다. 하지만 그런 식물도 세일즈맨의 작은 관심이 필요하다.
콧수염
세일즈맨은 무료한 자신의 일상에 변화를 주고 싶어 하며 한번쯤 다른 사람으로 살아보면 어떨지 생각한다. 그는 콧수염을 구입하고 자신을 위장한다. 수염은 그에게 다른 사람으로 살아볼수 있는 기회를 준다. 수염으로 변장을 한후 사람들의 반응을 관찰한다. 수염은 그에게 어떤의미를 줄까? 새로 찾은 자유, 아니면 그가 찾던 행복?
군인
나라를 지키는 임무를 수행하는 군인. 하지만 그는 군인의 의무를 제대로 행하지 못하고 탈주하고 있는 상황이다. 그는 군대라는 단체 집단에서 벗어나려고 현실에서 도피하고 있지만, 군제복은 그대로 입고 있다. 군 제복은 그에게 어떤 의미일까?
처음 군인이되었을 때, 군복은 그에게 나라를 위해 충성한다는 자부심을 갖게 하는 물체였을 수도 있다, 하지만 현재의 군복은 과거로부터의 흔적과 기억을 연상시키는 존재. 그 과거는 군인에게 자랑스러운 과거인지 아니면 지워버리고 싶은 과거 일지? 사람들은 그의 제복을 보고 존경을 표한다. 그를 영웅으로 보는 사람들의 시선은 표류하고 있는 상황의 그에게 심적으로 부담이 되는가, 아니면 그는 단순히 그역할에 부응되는 연기를 하고 있는가?
“물건의 의미”시리즈는 터키 소설가 Orhan Pamuk의 소설 “순수 박물관”을 읽고 영감을 받아 시작됬다. 소설속의 주인공은 한 여자를 20년간 사랑했지만 이루어질수 없는 사랑이었기때문에, 그녀를 사랑한 몇십년 동안 소지품을 하나씩 몰래 수집한다. 그가 수집한 그녀의 물건을 하나하나 볼때마다 각 물건에 연관된 그녀의 추억이 생각난다.
새로운 사람을 만났을때 그사람에 관한 아무 정보나 인식이 없는 백지 상태에서 어떤 사람인지 알아보는 방법중에 하나는 겉모습을 관찰해 보는것이다. 그사람의 소장품-어떤 옷을 입고, 어떤 소유품을 가지고 있는지가 그사람에 대해 많은 이야기를 해준다.
보는 상대의 관점에 따라 사물이 어떻게 다른 의미를 가질 수있는가에 관심을 가지게 되었다. 그 시각을 세가지 시선으로 나눈다면 우선 물건이 가지고 있는 고유, 사전적인 의미, 그 물건을 소장했던 사람들이 가지고 있는 개인적인 의미, 그리고 그 물건을 가지고 있던 사람을 알고 있었던 주위사람들이 그 물건을 통해 연상되는 의미로 나누어서 보았다.
첫번째로 일반적인 의미가 있다. 일반적으로 발레 슈즈는 매우 여성적이고 부드러운 이미지를 가지고 있다. 사람들은 발레공연에서 발레리나의 아름다운 연기에 심취하지만 정작 발레리나의 힘든 연습과정까지 연상되어 생각하지 않는다. 사실 발레리나는 종종 발레슈즈가 닳아 신지 못할때까지 피나는 연습을 한다. 백조들이 물위에 떠있을때 아름답지만 물아래에서는 끊임없이 발김질을 하는것과 비슷하다.
두번째로 물건을 소장했던 사람에게 그 물건이 가지고 있는 특별한 의미가 있다. 개인적인 경험이 더해져서 일반적인 의미와는 다른의미를 가지게 된다. 소장했던 사람만 알고 있는 그물건에 관련된 비밀이 있을수도 있다.
마지막으로, 그 물건을 소유했던 사람을 알았던 사람이 보았을때, 그 물건을 소유했던 사람의 모습이 함께 연상된다. 물건을 통해 어떤 한사람을 생각하게 되고, 그사람의 기억, 채취와 감각을 다시 느끼게 된다. 그사람과 보냈던 시간, 외모, 성격, 향기, 또는 그사람의 느낌 등.
이 시리즈에서 또 다른 주제는 우리가 물건을 통해 어떤 의무를 부여받고 또 역할을 부여하고 있나이다. 모든 사람들에게 사회적 일원으로서 수행이 요구되어지는 보이지않는 규칙과 임무가 있다. 역할 수행과 타이틀에 관해 생각해 보았다. 군제복과 같은 상징적인 물체는 보는 사람들로 하여금 “애국심”, “용감함”, “젊음” 등을 제일 먼저 연상 시킬것이다. 근데 만약 그 군인이 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못하고 군대라는 그룹에 적응하지 못하여 현실에서 도피하는 상황이라면?
어떤사람이 당연하게 추측되어지는 선입견이나 카테고리에 분류되지 않을때, 보통 사람들은 자신들의 예측이 틀렸음에 불안해 한다. 일부는 이 새로 보이는 역할을 또다시 분류하여 새로운 레벨을 지어 붙이려고 할지도 모른다. 사람들은 익숙한것에 편안함을 느끼고 새로운것에 불안함을 느끼는듯 하다. 사람들이 당연스럽게 예상했던 모습 선입견이 현실로는 전혀 다른 경우 였을때 일어나는 반전을 묘사하고 싶었다.
주인공들은 현실 사회에 타협하지만 자신이 진짜 이루고 싶은것을 위해 묘안을 찾고있기도 하다. 사회적인 역할 기대에 부응하여 사회적인 명성과 타이틀을 얻을것인지, 자기 자신의 기대치를 만족시키기 위해 꿈을 쫓을것인지, 두가지 모두 경우에 따라 행복의 요인이 될수 있다.
사회에서 충족 해야하는 임무와 자기자신에게 요구 하는 임무 수행. 어느것이 더 중요한 사항인지 궁금해졌다.
