Translator

Salesman: I came to buy a moustache, but this seller does not seem to
understand my words. Would you please translate for me?

Translator: Yes, I would help you.

Salesman: I am a sales man. My job is calling customers or visiting
them one by one to sell things. When I was a child, my dream was to
become a pianist. But since my family was poor, and couldn’t afford
piano lessons, so I folded my dream to become a pianist in earlier days,
and became a sales man to compromise with the reality.

Translator: I understand.

Salesman: Repeated days throughout the job.
I keep saying same things to customers to sell what I have,
and sometimes being treated as a strange man.

I play piano every nights when I go home from my work,
which calms me down.
I am a self-taught, amateur pianist.

And I stare at a small plant on a table, and talk about how my day was.
The plant is always watching me on the spot.
I feel like it would understand me.
I can even tell my deepest secret to the plant.

Minor presence alone is a great comfort to me.

I say “Thank You”.
I take care of watering, for its gentle existence.

Translator: Yes.

Salesman: Do you think that I would be able to expect a same type of
communication method between people?

Translator: For the relationships between people, there are different
interests, and expectations intertwined, so it is hard to communicate
in only one direction.
If so, that seems to be so selfish.

Salesman: That makes sense.

Abandoned dream of my childhood,
and the vague and repetitive daily life.
I felt my life was too monotonous.

I was thinking, ‘why is someone else’s life seems to be happier all the time’?

So I decided to buy a moustache. I can disguise myself with it.

Having been indecisive and timid,
I wanted to create a virtual character
that is pleasant, cheerful and confident,
and experience how it would be like living as a different person
even for a few days.

That is why I came here, to buy a moustache, but this merchant doesn’t
seem to understand what I mean. I think he is a foreigner.

Salesman: You’ve heard my story, would you please interpreter to this seller?

Translator: Sure thing. You would like to say that you want to buy a ‘moustache’?

Salesman: Yes.

Translator: This gentleman wants to buy a ‘desire’ for his new life.

Merchant: How can I sell ‘desire’ that can not be even caught with my own hands?

Translator: Then would you sell ‘the merchant’s desire to sell’ instead?

Merchant: That is one big difference.

Salesman: I said ‘moustache’ to be cleared. Please translate exactly

Translator: This gentleman wants to buy a ‘hope’ .

Merchant: Moustache,
a disingenuous mask can’t replace the role of ‘hope’, can it?
But the salesman seems to have ‘hope’ to live one’s life the fullest already.
Please tell him that the gentleman already has ‘hope’ in his mind.

Now is time to close the shop door.
Please comeback when you are sure what to buy.

세일즈맨: 수염을 사고싶습니다. 근데 이 상인이 제 말을 이해하지 못하는군요.
제 말을 옆에서 통역해 주시겠습니까?

통역가: 그러지요.

세일즈맨: 저는 세일즈 맨입니다. 제 주된 업무는 전화로나 고객을 직접 방문하여
물건을 파는 역할입니다. 어렸을적 제 꿈은 피아니스트 였습니다.
그러나 저희집의 형편이 그리 넉넉치 않아서 그 꿈을 일찌감치 접었습니다.

통역가: 네.

세일즈맨: 제 직업상 저는 하루종일 똑같은 말을 되풀이 하며 사람들을 만나고,
때로는 이상한 사람 취급을 받기도 하지요.
매일 저녁 퇴근하여 집에 오면 저는 혼자서 습득하여 배운 피아노를 칩니다.

그리고 제가 키우는 책상위에 있는 작은 화초를 보며 오늘 하루 일과에 대해 이야기 합니다.
이때만은 저는 진심을 다해 맘속에 있는 이야기를 합니다.
식물은 항상 그자리에서 저를 바라보고
저의 모든면을 이해해 주는것 같았어요.
살아있다는 그 미미한 존재감 만으로도 저에게 큰 위로가 됩니다.

저는 그 존재가 고마워서, 물을 주며 돌봐주지요.

통역가: 그렇군요.

세일즈맨: 제가 사람에게서 같은 방식의 한쪽 방향 소통을 기대한다면 욕심이 과한것 이겠죠?

통역가: 사람과 사람간에는 서로의 이해관계가 얽혀 있으니 한쪽 방향으로만 소통할수가
없겠죠. 만약 그렇다면 너무 이기적으로 느껴지는데요.

세일즈맨: 포기한 제 어렸을적 꿈
그 꿈에 대한 막연한 동경
그리고 매일 매일 단조롭게 반복되는 생활,
저는 제 일상이 너무 따분하게 느껴졌습니다.
다른 사람의 인생은 더 행복해 보이고,
‘왜 나만?’ 하는 생각이 들더군요.
그래서 저는 수염을 사기로 결심했습니다.
수염을 사서 변장을 하여,
단 며칠만이라도 다른 사람으로 살아보면 어떨지 궁금 했어요.
지금 저의 우유부단하고 소심한 모습이 아니라,
내안에 또다른 캐릭터를 만들어 가면을 쓴다고 할까요?
어떤가요, 좋은 생각이지 않습니까?
그래서 이렇게 수염을 사려고 왔는데 이 상인이 제 말을 이해하지 못하네요.
아무래도 외국인 인가 봅니다.
자 이제 제 이야기을 이해하셨으면 옆에서 통역을 도와 주시겠습니까?

통역가: 그러지요. 그러니깐 지금 수염을 사시고 싶다는 메세지를 전달하면 되는거죠?

세일즈맨: 네 그렇습니다.

통역가: 이 신사분이 새로운 삶을 향한 ‘욕망’을 사고 싶다는군요.

상인: '욕망'은 손에 잡히지 않는데 어떻게 팔라는 거요?

통역가: 그럼 상인인 당신의 지금 ‘팔고 싶어하는 욕망’을 대신 팔면 되지 않나요?

상인: 그건 차원이 틀리지 않소.

세일즈맨: ‘수염’이 사고 싶다고 했습니다.
정확히 전달해 주십시오.

통역가: 이 신사분은 새로운 삶에 대한 ‘희망’을 사고 싶다고 합니다.

상인:
'희망’은 이미 그 신사분이 마음속에 가지고 있다고 전해주시오.
수염이
솔직하지 않은 가면의 모습이
‘희망’을 대신 할순 없지만
자신의 인생을 의미있게 살고 싶어하는것 자체가,
이미 마음속에 ‘희망’을 품고 있다는뜻이 아니겠소.
자 이제 상점 문을 닫을 시간입니다.
사고 싶은 것이 무엇인지 다시 생각해본 후에 오시오.
